Sexual objectification is not new. It has existed for as long as people have looked at bodies and decided what they were for. Mostly, it was aimed at women, reduced to a shape, a function, a thing to be looked at rather than someone doing the looking. That version of objectification was never wanted or asked for. It was done to someone.
BDSM took that same word and turned it inside out.
The Handover
Somewhere in the last several decades, kink communities picked up objectification and rebuilt it on purpose. The direction of power reversed. Instead of a woman being reduced against Her will, a man began asking to be reduced, handing his identity to a woman who would decide what to do with it. She becomes Mistress. He becomes the object.
Why do men want that? Most submissives who come to objectification aren’t looking for punishment. They’re looking for relief. Being ‘someone’, a name, a job, a set of decisions to make every hour of every day, is exhausting in a way that rarely gets said out loud. Handing that off to a Mistress, even for an hour, means there’s nothing left to manage. She decides what he is. He doesn’t have to decide anything at all.
That’s not a small thing to give someone. It’s not a small thing to take, either.
Purpose, Not Punishment
A Mistress who works in objectification isn’t degrading Her sub for the sake of it. She’s assigning him a function. There’s a difference, and it’s the difference the whole kink hinges on.
An object has a job. A table holds things. A stool supports weight. When a Mistress turns Her sub into either one, She isn’t erasing him out of cruelty, She’s giving him something to be, which is often easier to hold onto than something to feel. The training in objectification is training in stillness, in usefulness, in staying exactly where he’s put until She says otherwise. Control, here, isn’t the opposite of care. It’s the shape care takes in this particular scene.
Some Mistresses use objectification as a warm-up. Some use it as the entire point of the session. Either way, the sub isn’t being punished for existing. He’s being repurposed.
She Stays a Domme. He Becomes a Thing.
This is the part that gets lost when people simplify objectification into a joke about furniture: the Mistress does not disappear into the scene the way the sub does. She stays exactly who She is — sensual, aware, fully present — while he becomes less of a person and more of a fixture.
If She loses Her own presence, the scene collapses into something clinical. It’s not a pose She’s performing. It’s a position of authorship She holds the entire time, deciding what he is, what he’s for, when he stops being an object and gets his name back. The sexuality of the exchange comes from that imbalance staying intact: a woman fully in Her body and Her power, opposite a person who has agreed to hand over both for a little while.
What It Looks Like in Practice
Objectification takes shape in dozens of small, deliberate ways. A Mistress might use Her sub as a human ashtray, an old, particular corner of the kink that still holds up because of exactly how far it pushes the idea of being used rather than being wanted. She might turn him into human furniture, a footstool, a table, a surface built to hold Her weight or Her belongings while he holds his silence.
Every form starts the same way, with a man agreeing to stop being a person for a while, and his Domme deciding exactly what he becomes instead.
